“A good calculator is accurate, independent, and knows how to get things done”
We’re a great team, say Elfi, Annebel, Heleen, and Roberto, calculators at Luyten Interiolizers. To make the team even greater, they’re looking for a new colleague. “If you have any experience in this business, that’s a definite plus.”
Could that job opening for calculator at Luyten Interiolizers be something for you? It helps to know what to expect. So, let Elfi, Annebel, Heleen, and Roberto tell you what the job entails, what it requires of you, and what makes it so fascinating.
Experience
“The profile we’re looking for, is very specific”, says Elfi, who has been a calculator and coordinator at Luyten Interiolizers for more than seven years. “If you’re a calculator in the construction industry, you’re often very specialized in one specific aspect of the business. But if you’re a calculator with us, you’ll need a broad, basic knowledge – ranging from demolition over shell construction to finishing. That’s why our job is never the same.”
Calculator Annebel agrees: “Someone without experience would have quite a hard time getting up to speed with everything right from the start. That’s why experience is an absolute requirement – however, we certainly leave room to learn. As a team, we support each other in this.”
“It would indeed be preferable that our future colleague has some experience in this industry”, says Roberto. “They should know what interior construction entails, and preferably also have extensive materials knowledge. A good calculator always thinks in terms of solving problems. Of course, none of us knows everything, so if we have questions, we don’t hesitate to as our colleagues, suppliers or subcontractors for advice.”
Looking beyond
The team agrees that making an error in a calculation can have serious financial consequences for the company. “The work starts with us. That means we have a lot of responsibility”, says Annebel.
“So, the message is: stay focused”, says Roberto. “On the other hand: to err is human. If something does go wrong, it’s important that we as a team work as quickly as possible to find a solution for the problem.”
“You must be willing and able to work to a high degree of precision”, says Elfi. “Details are particularly important in this job. If you change anything in your calculation, you have to know which consequences that could have. In short, it comes down to this: you must be able to see way beyond what is demanded of you.”
“That’s right,” says Heleen. “Accuracy, independence – but also being good at teamwork and at getting things done: those are the skills that are essential for this job.”
Figures & intuition
But what exactly does the job of calculator involve, and which actions are required? “We generate the total quote for our customers, which means that we calculate everything”, says Annebel. “We also check the architects’ bills of quantities, and request price quotes from subcontractors, with the ultimate goal of preparing the entire package for the customer. We are the ones that tell them what the overall price will be. So, a calculator had better be good at working with figures. Also, because cost calculation isn’t an exact science, you need a healthy dose of intuition as well.”
Elfi: “We’re not looking for a ‘classic’ calculator profile, because our calculators often go out on the road. The best thing about our job is that we get to contribute pro-actively to the entire process. We’re not just filling in figures and budgets, we’re also talking with designers and clients. So you need quite a bit of leadership qualities, and you need a strong sense of responsibility.”
Young team
Elfi, Annebel, Heleen, and Roberto would very much like to welcome a new colleague in their midst, and soon. As they see it, that new colleague couldn’t have found a better job. “The challenges are great, because at Luyten Interiolizers, we cover all facets of interior construction, from A to Z. That’s a very broad range”, Heleen says. “We learn something new every day, so it’s certainly not boring! And you’ll become part of a fun, young team. The atmosphere is great, we’re a really close-knit team. Luyten has a flexible work culture, leaving sufficient attention for a good work-life balance.”
